Julie’s Story

Writer: Kandi HughesKandi Hughes

Julie’s special story took place in 2001. The previous Christmas, one of Julie’s sons had his heart set on a Game Station that was impossible to find. Trying to get a hold of the wanted gift brought back memories of a story from her mother’s childhood.

Her mother’s story goes back to the early 1950s. When her mother was a young girl, Dick Tracy was a comic strip that the masses read in their Sunday newspapers. Dick Tracy married his true love, Tess Trueheart, and to their delight they had a daughter that was born in a squad car that was named Bonnie Braids.

When Julie’s mom was a small child she had hoped to get a Bonnie Braids doll for Christmas. However, she was one of nine children, and with such a large family, the little girl’s dream was not meant to be.

In the spring of 2001, Julie could not get that memory of her mother’s out of her mind. As Julie was perusing E-Bay, she was surprised to find that exact doll was up for sale. Julie sat by her computer all day participating in the active auction. Every time she placed a bid, someone would outbid her. At the close of the auction, Julie was not sure if she had obtained the doll or not.

Julie was so excited when the Bonnie Braids doll was delivered she could hardly wait to get it to her mother. As it turned out, Julie and her sons were able to get to her mom’s house right before Mother’s Day.

Julie couldn’t stand the anticipation waiting for the gift to be opened. But, unfortunately her mother was not being cooperative. Grandma wanted to wait until the actual holiday to open the present. Finally, after some persuasion from Julie and the grandsons that they wanted to be there when she opened the package, Julie’s mother finally took a good look at the gift.

With a puzzled voice she wondered why Julie had chosen Christmas wrapping paper. When she finally got the paper off, she started to cry. Julie gave a worried look to her three sons as she was afraid she had made a terrible mistake. She hadn’t meant to upset her mother or worse she was afraid she had made her mother mad.

After a moment the grandmother was transformed to a young girl once again. She glowed as she tenderly touched the doll and exclaimed “Bonnie what took you so long to get here?”

With teary hugs all around, Julie knew this special doll was meant to find her, so she could make the overdue delivery of Bonnie Braids to her mother.
